Behind The Lens

Location

I photographed this scene near my home at Sleepy Hollow Lake in Athens, NY. Photography is my passion as I’m always driven to capture those visual moments that excite me.

Time

This photo was taken in May 2023 at 6:40 pm soon after a fierce storm battered this part of New York’s Hudson River Valley. I could see a beautiful vivid rainbow was forming and decided to take a drive to observe its colors over a more open landscape. A few moments later I stopped my car and jumped out to see a breathtaking gift of nature. A vibrant rainbow had formed with a lesser rainbow just beyond it. In between the two were storm clouds appearing to be channeled back into the upper atmosphere. As I was clicking away with my iPhone some other cars pulled up behind with my neighbors being equally awestruck by the scene. This photo was one of many that I captured that day.

Lighting

The late afternoon sun was coming out from the fluffy white clouds behind me. Bright sunlight was cast on the field in the foreground, abutting the tree line. Beyond the trees the sky was still dark and ominous as the storm clouds were dissipating with the rainbows.

Equipment

I took this photo with an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I used the hood of my Subaru Outback to steady my hand as I lacked a tripod in that moment. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

Where I live Nature herself is constantly revealing breathtaking cloud formations, brilliant sunsets and eerie distortions of sun and sky as she adapts to climate change and the presence of smoke from large Canadian wildfires.

Editing

I was so excited by what I witnessed I knew I wanted to upload a shot soon as possible. This image was minimally processed using iPhone’s editing software.

In my camera bag

Realistically, my iPhone is always my most accessible camera. I am constantly reading and taking online classes to expand my knowledge and skill in using this readily available and capable instrument.

Feedback

Climate change is happening and Mother Earth is showing us how she takes care of herself. There are burgeoning opportunities to capture her power and glory.
