I captured this photo almost five years ago and it remains one of my favorite coyote images to date. I’ll never forget the feeling as I laid in the snow, waiting for the perfect moment for this young hunter to dive for his prey. I fully expected to have a mild day in the park, so I didn’t bring along any waterproof clothing that day. After about an hour of laying there in soaking wet clothing, I finally got the shot, but was reminded of this old poem I heard long ago:

A coyote takes flight among a winter scene,
While I lay with my camera in frozen jeans,
The snow bites my legs with its cold, icy venom,
For the love of God… why did I wear denim?
